Introducing the Czapek & Cie Antarctique S ‘Sashiko’ Watch
Thursday - 06 April 2023
Putting a unique spin on the brand’s sporty chic watch, Czapek & Cie unveils another edition to its popular Antarctique watch collection. The Czapek & Cie Antarctique S Sashiko. The contemporary take on the company’s traditional sports watch with an integrated bracelet brings yet another new form to the collection and has been released as part of the eagerly anticipated Watches & Wonders 2023 event in Geneva. The S “Sashiko” variant presents the time on a pink or blue dial with an elegant floral patterned texture that creates multiple facets for the light to bounce off. The effect resembles the sparkling cuts of a diamond, framed by a smooth polished stainless steel bezel.
Czapek Cie has released several exciting iterations of the Antarctique collection this year. Alongside these two beautifully coloured watches is the new Czapek & Cie Antarctique Titanium Dark Sector watch, which serves as a nod to the Dark Sector Laboratory and telescopes that are located at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station in Antarctica. It features a segmented hour track that foregoes the use of hour markers and offers a simple time-only display in anthracite. Also – the Antarctique Revelation watch, exposing its expertly engineered movement through the dial of a chic sports watch design. We also covered the Czapek & Cie Antarctique S “La Carte des Nuages” watch, presented in a choice of a white or grey mother-of-pearl dial with special Czapek-cut diamonds situated at 12 o’clock. The new Antarctique S “Sashiko” watch, however, is a simple and parred-back watch that still evokes the sporty elegant and chic aesthetic of this popular collection but now offers two bolder and more playful dial colours to enjoy.
The new Czapek & Cie Antarctique S “Sashiko” watch
The new Czapek & Cie Antarctique S “Sashiko” watch is a mix of fascinating details, light-reflecting dial patterns, and intriguing textures. This special dial seen in a stunning blue and pink colour pays homage to a three-dimensional Japanese stitching that was used throughout the Edo period. The geometric lines are clear and inviting, enabling light to bounce off the sharp lines and interact with the applied hour markers and hands uniquely. The three-dimensional stamped dial pattern is inspired by the stylised lotus flower and was chosen for the model by Marie-Alix de Roquemarel. The repeating squares are set at a 45-degree angle to another – each one boasting a total of six facets. Softer shades of colour and sugary-toned surfaces can be witnessed as the wrist is turned at an angle, inviting light to dance across the surface of the dial through a scratch-resistant and anti-reflective sapphire crystal glass.
A velvet brushed ring fractures around the outer edge of each of the two dial options of the new Antarctique S “Sashiko” watch, offering a way to track the stick hour markers and the outer scale of minutes. Absorbed into the collection as if by osmosis, the Antarctique S “Sashiko” watch is made at home within this series of sport-chic watches and will be developed on a small scale to mimic the ethos of the brand – a traditional Swiss watchmaking company that remains modestly small. The watch is crafted from stainless steel and measures a diameter of 38.5mm. It features a screw-down crown a 3 o’clock to assist with a 120-meter water resistance and exposes the movement through its crisp sapphire crystal glass caseback.
At the heart of the new Czapek & Cie Antarctique S “Sashiko” watch is the self-winding Calibre SXH5.01, which has been conceived entirely in-house with an off-centre micro-rotor and a free-sprung balance wheel with variable inertia and four gold adjustable weights. It also features a gear train held into place by several skeletonised bridges and can be admired via the back of the case as the movement performs to a rhythm of 28,800 vibrations per hour, producing a total power reserve once fully wound of 60 hours. The movement propels a set of hands around both the pink or blue dial, as well as a majestic sweeping second hand that travels over the Czapek & Cie lettering at 12 o’clock.
Czapek & Cie has fitted the new Antarctique S “Sashiko” watch on an integrated bracelet crafted from stainless steel. A great level of attention has gone into the design of the bracelet, promising comfort in every situation. The smaller space between the lugs has to be carefully adjusted creating a subtly curving line that tapers from the widest point to the narrowest point. Brushed steel links are connected by polished central C-shaped links and the bracelet features a quick-change system that enables you to quickly change from the bracelet to an additional rubber or leather strap supplied with the purchase of each watch.
